Back to the Classes

May 27, 2010

Two years after dropping out of my MA English Lit course, i went back and have finished writing my first year exams. Being at home and having a recently retired mother to take care of the trading has led to this. I am much (Two whole years) older now and it was to write five full papers of English literature in ten days. Today was the last exam. Results are due out in August. I am fairly certain i will pass easily.

Funny thing about English Literature, is less than ten percent of the students are male. The rest are all females of all ages - from girls in their early twenties to gray haired teachers. I was among a handful of males (all of us men, seem to be in the late twenties/early thirties age group) in the exam centre. Dont men read literature any more?

men are busy earning money

i forgot to mention. most of the women there older (mid 30s to 40s) and seemed like working types. I must be one of among the very few doing this for non-money reasons. rest all seemed to be working professionals. So that doesnt account for the male/female divide.

what were your reasons for doing it?

what are the women's reasons?

I am doing it because essentially i have time to kill and i am studying a course,i actually wanted to do when i was young.

The women all seem to be teachers/wannabe teachers, who want increment/govt posting etc.

The puzzling part is there seem to be very few male takers for English. When i did MA history a couple of years back, it was like 35:65 male female ratio. Now it is like 5:95.

For some weird reason, literature is associated with girls/women. Of all the things, reading should be something that should not be associated with a gender, I think!
It is amazing that you are doing what you love......

@Bala, well, I was asking why you wanted to.

@shilpa, "taking English lit grad courses" is a ludicrous index of views on "literature" and "reading".

@Anonymous - what is that supposed to mean?
All I wanted to say is that anything that does not involve math/science is considered non-manly.
Anyone who is interested in reading could sign up for a literature course. Why should it be associated with some kind of femininity?
