July 30, 2007

Excitement in "professional life" (hee hee, i like that term), keeps me from ranting here. With gravity catching up with the stock markets all over the world life has become interesting. It almost seems easy money times are over now and a lot of LBO deals are in trouble. Seriously, gundoosi vikkaravan, puNNakku vikkaravan ellam LBO deal panna arambichuta appuram ipdi agama enna agum.

Dead Like Me

July 24, 2007

I am watching season 1 of Dead Like Me and it is amazingly good. The amount of profanity used in this tv series makes it look as if Tarantino wrote the dialogues, but it works out well. Its worth checking out. (It almost approaches chick flick territory in some places, but has enough irreverence in it to escape that label)

Dell and customer service - part II

July 20, 2007

A week ago, i had posted about my DELL laptop crashing and a Dell customer advocate contacting me. Well over the past week, Brad Laurich (that's the customer advocate) and myself exchanged a couple of miles, in which i narrated my tale of woe about a broken battery. Brad promised to have the matter taken care of. And he has!!. 8 hours ago i received a mail from Dell's Bangalore operations asking for my mobile no. And the moment i replied, i had a real person talking to me about my requirements. I have provided him with my contact address and he has promised to send a quote for my spare parts!. Now this call came on friday evening after 6 PM. How is that for customer service!.

The internet is full of horror stories about Dell's customer service. But i have had a great experience with them. Exactly one week after blogging about my problems, they have taken the trouble to contact me and solve my problem (without me going through the proper channels). This, ladies and gentlemen, is customer service. I should know for i work in a small brokerage firm. Most of the time, the only thing that ensures customer retention is this sort of customer service - the personal touch, the willingness to go the extra mile to hear out the customer. Even if you aren't able to do what the customer wants, most of them are happy if they hear a human voice or see a human face treating them as important to their business. This is a lesson i have personally learned over the past two years.

A big thanks to all the customer service people at Dell. You guys ROCK.

தினகரன் = நாய்; தினமலர் = பெருச்சாளி

how to dub it

July 17, 2007

The teenager in the immediate family has given a thumbs down to Harry Potter 5 saying it isn't worth spending Rs. 40 on, so i am going to wait for the thiruttu VCD. Anyway here in madurai we get to see only the tamil dubbed version - harry potterum phoenix kattalayum. Note the tamil title - they have translated order of the phoenix as "phoenix kattalai". Admittedly the translation/titling is not as bad as that of other movies like aandhai manidhan (chronicles of riddick);marma manidhan (V for Vendetta); eragonin mandhira padai (eragon); baadhala ulagam (blade trinity); garudan (stealth), karibean kallarai theevu (pirates of the Caribbean) etc etc.

This just indicates how bad the tamil dubbing/translation of english movies is becoming . The people doing the tamil translation/dubbing some times do a good job but most of the time they try and change the English dialogue to fit the Tamil audience and end up mangling the story beyond recognition. For instance in the Tamil version of casino royale, the words of an about-to-die vesper lynd are given the typical tamil heroine tint and the whole scene turns out like something from metti oli. The worst tamil dubbed serial/movie must be the comedy serial small wonder shown in Vijay TV . It used to be sort of cute ten years back with the little girl robot plotline, but then they started to air it with tamil dialogues and it now belongs to the "its so bad its good" category. But i have to admit, tamil retrofitting has its good moments - like Samo Hung fighting to the tune of paravai muniyamma's singam pola nadandhu vandhan endhan perandi.

Dell and customer service

July 14, 2007

In my previous post about how my dell inspiron 600m has broken down, A Dell Customer Advocate has left the following comment

My name is Brad and I work at Dell headquarters in Round Rock, TX. I came across your blog and saw that you described an issue with your Dell system. I am not sure if you have resolved the problem yet, but if you still need help please contact me back at the email address below with "Attn Brad" in the subject line.

Brad
Dell Customer Advocate
customer_advocate@dell.com

Bravo Dell!. First of all having a group of people trawling blogs looking for problems with Dell products itself is great. I just googled for "dell customer advocate" and found a lot of similar stories to mine - bloggers who blogged about problems with dell products have got completely unexpected and unsolicited help from Dell customer advocates. I am very much impressed with your customer reach out. Even if you are unable to help me out, this was a very pleasant surprise. My experience with DELL's service in America was great and this web reachout proves you guys do care about your customers.

My charger and battery are dead. My problem is i bought the my DELL laptop in America and i now live in India. I am unable to get original DELL replacement parts here in India. The dell.co.in website's "parts and upgrades" link doesn't work. To contact DELL i would have to call up their Bangalore line (which is toll free only through a BSNL landline) I have temporarily solved the charger problem by buying a "Made in China" adapter through eBay to replace my broken one. My Battery is still dead and i have to replace it sometime soon.

DELL's inconvenient direct selling policy in India might work in the metros but here in Madurai, people avoid DELL. There are dealers and service centers for all other brands - lenovo, toshiba, acer, compaq and HCL but not DELL. Anyone who want to buy a Dell product or service has to contact Bangalore. With Acer introducing a 21000 Rs laptop, the laptop market is set to takeoff here and DELL would miss the party. My laptop is getting old and worn down and i would be replacing it soon, but i don't think it would be a DELL i would be buying . It would be either a Acer or a presario. They have the price range and the local service.
